10 THINGS to do to get great skin


It’s the beginning of the month and the 2nd half of the year! How are your New Year’s resolutions going? That bad, huh? Yeah, me too. I thought I’d try to re-instill my resolutions in a new series I’m calling 10 Things. 10 Things will focus on 10 good habits I will try to carry out every month for a whole month that will revolve around beauty, skincare and most likely, health care as well (since they tend to go hand in hand). Feel free to try them too, or make up your own 10 beauty related things!  [I stole this idea from the InStyle.com beauty segment called 10 Ways]

10 Things to do to get better skin

1. Always wash your face at night (no matter how tired, lazy or drunk you are)
Why? Because its gross. Your face, that is... All the pollution, sweat and god knows what else clogging your pores causes breakouts, and besides, your face will thank you for it in the morning. 
 

2. East less grains (low glycemic diet)
Why? Grains (no I don't necessarily mean carbs, but grains, calm down already) are known to cause breakouts in some. And if you already have a tendency towards moderate to severe acne, try cutting out grains, which are also known, just like dairy, to cause inflammation. While you're at it, read the Primal Blueprint - that book explains things better.
 

3. Eat more organic whole berries (blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, acai berries, you get the point)
Why? Antioxidants look good on you. They provide an extra barrier for you against the sun and
help protect the cells from damage and delay wrinkles and all other things that women don’t want. Plus they taste good. And look at Scarlett Johansson for Christ's sake! I'll have what she's having. So throw a couple .oz’s down your gullet once in a while and enjoy.
 

4. Drink more tea (specifically green, rooibus and detox teas)
Why? More antioxidants. Also, detox tea does some really awesome stuff to you when you drink it. It clears up acne scars and break-outs FAST and can clean your insides and give you energy. I pinky swear.
 

5. Drink a tall glass of water with lemon at least 3 times a week
Why? Because it also keeps acne at bay. The citrus helps clean the toxins out of your body and makes your face squeaky clean. And Cate Blanchett does it too (check out Glamour Magazine, November 2009) - she "swear[s] by it"! And her skin is pretty awesome, yeah?
 

6. Stop stressing! (easier said than done, I know)
Why? Because it makes you look like hell. The dark circles, the break outs, the puffy eyes, it ain’t cute. Go get a massage, put some tea bags on your eye balls and zone out on the couch for 20 minutes listening to yoga chants (last part optional).
 

7. Stop picking (see above)
Why? Because acne scars take forever to go away. Trust me, I know.
 

8. Get more sleep (seriously, Cassie... no more late night blog / article formulations)
Why? See #6. Also, cells turn over and your skin replenishes itself at night. If you fuck up your sleep cycle, you fuck up your skin. Thats right, I said it. It's called beauty sleep for a reason!
 

9. Eat fish and / or take fish oil, biotin, vitamin supplements, etc.
Why? Salmon has omega 3 fatty acids which can help reduce stress (#6 again). Plus, the supplements are good for you. And your skin. And your immune system. And I'm sure other things too.
 

10. Stop over-plucking already!
Why? Because some eyebrow hairs will never grow back. You just gotta trust me on this one.
